I greatly enjoyed my WLE. I learned so much, and I enjoyed having many great and meaningful conversations with my mentor. I also loved how we got to kind of see how our project will effect where we interned at. I am very proud of the choice I made to intern there and could never regret it. This definitely effected my future choices of what major or hobbies I might pursue. I really enjoyed the programming I did and am definitely going to consider it again in the future.

Today at my internship I began my finalized version of my script of my project and got pretty far. I have improved as an intern greatly because I have learned a lot of skills in order to create my product and have gained the skills to think critically in order to apply my skills. I love my workplace for a number of reasons; the people are very kind and funny, it is always fun, it is always entertaining which makes time go by fast and my mentor is VERY smart and teaches me so much more than just programming.

In order for me to get hired at my WLE site, I contacted my adviser last year, CHENG, and asked if knew anyone that could possibly have an internship possibility. Over the year, a contact that Mr. Cheng had had a syllabus written for the ENTIRE internship length with descriptive activities for each day. When it came to actually getting hired, I had an phone conference interview with my Mentor in order to show that I was mature enough and interested in this internship. The most effective way of looking for a job and getting hired is using contacts, calling and staying persistent. As a result of my WLE, I think being a profession or a responsible adult in the work world means being mature in the workplace, leaving personal life problems out of work, being ON-TIME, doing what you need to get done, and doing more than you need to do so productivity in your workplace can improve and possible get you noticed in a positive way in your workplace.

During this internship I have learned that with a little practice, I am an excellent problem solver. With the programming skills I have acquired during my WLE I have learned to locate faults and errors in a program and fix them using coding in something called scripts. A challenge I faced learning how to do this is learning the syntax of programming, which is exactly how the coding must be organized and typed, this was extremely challenging because even the slightest not needed character can mess up the whole script (i.e. a comma). Something I learned in this day and internship, is that before you go attacking your final goal or ending outcome, you must take necessary steps in which you know how to do before you can rush forward. My creativity is put into this project through my critical thinking skills of all the possible ways to write the code and which I think is most efficient. My WLE made me a good programmer(for a beginner) and potentially can effect a lot of dispatch and save WM a lot of money annually. I believe that in order to make better efficiency, you must look into areas which you have not thoroughly examined. An important skill I learned that could help in the profession I intern in, is the ability to work with the program MAS and make it faster and more efficient. What I did in my WLE is very important because it can potentially make 4-5 hours of work be done in about 45 minutes, which is a GREAT improvement and leaves more time for work that needs to get done, finished. Before I interned at my WLE site, I had no interest in computer science, but what I've learned and how much interest I have had in this internship have had me greatly consider the possibility of being a computer programmer.

I believe the leadership skill I use the most is Critical Thinking. I often have to use this skill while creating scripts in a program called MAS because I have to find out new ways to make the script run fast and efficient. This requires critical thinking because the directions to do so are not given and require context of programming and deep thinking. I am using this pretty well because when my partner Rahil and I had to create a script, and our mentor expected us to do it a different way, and when Rahil and I thought of a way, it was completely different from what our mentor thought we would do, and it impressed him. The leadership skills my mentor uses the most are thinking critically and manage projects effectively. He uses this because his whole job is to create efficiency

Today Rahil and I began writing a script from scratch in order to apply our knowledge of programming to go to a more critical thinking and advanced level of programming. It took us about 2 hours to form a working script that can accomplish a task assigned. My mentor and I discussed how our project was changing a bit, but in a good way, to make it easier, more efficient, and effect. My project so far is coming a long good, we are mastering the skills needed in order complete our project. Our project is making the roll-off data part of dispatch more efficient.

Workplace Learning Experience Project Plan

Statement of Purpose

The point of my project is to make one specific area of dispatch at Waste Management easier and more efficient. We are completing this project also to help my mentor save the company a lot of money. This project is very difficult and requires a lot of critical thinking and I am excited to see the results.

Description

My project is creating a type of script within a program called MAS that can make 3 hours worth of work go by in minutes. This will unfortunately either make jobs be terminated, or possibly making jobs go to the next level. This project with be in effect about 2 weeks after WLE ends, but be complete on the last day of WLE. This project’s results will be used daily at dispatch and can be used in many other Waste Management districts other than Alameda.

Project’s Impact

Depth:

My project is pretty important, it is needed and can potentially save Waste Management a lot of money throughout the years

Breadth:

My project can potentially affect a lot people in the Waste Management company, because it eliminates the required daily tedious 4 hours of work that happen. This project involves myself and my ‘co-worker’, Rahil Maharaj.

Longevity:

This project will last about 9 years (estimated), or however long Waste Management keeps the program MAS which we are working with.

For my WLE project my mentor, Rahil and I are creator a script for our program in order to promote efficiency. I did not come up with this idea, my mentor created this project for us, he has been planning it for about a year now. I am excited to do this project because it can actually make a difference and potentially save Waste Management a lot of money over the years. In order to accomplish my project, I am going to have to master the basics of programming, apply them to a script, begin fixing all error that can happen and begin making it faster and efficient.

My main job at my WLE is to makes something called scripts on a program, which is why I have the title "Programmer." I am completing a numerous amount of tasks. I make a lot of scripts, make tickets for dispatch, run something called Wednesday's sequential. On a normal day, I walk to the back gate of the building and call my mentor so he can let me in. Then we go to our desks and begin going over our goals for the day. When we are done with that we start up our computers and begin learning basic programming skills and begin recording scripts. Sometimes we solve riddles within the scripts so we can learn how things wok and how things make "errors."

1. My mentor's name is Mark Cramer and he is a dispatch manager.
2. Marks day consists of arriving at work at 4 in the morning and preparing for the day making sure every truck goes to every house they are supposed to and report any problems that happen, but on the side he is editing a program that will make the trucks dispatch a lot more efficient and organized.
3. He became interesting in how the organization of any business works, the technical and efficient part of the business. He first worked in operations at boarders then came to WM after he left that job and he had a 4 year college education at UC Davis he got his Bachelors in Sociology.

1.My work place is Dispatch of Wastemanagement, it basically handles all the trucks the go and collect your garbage every week. 2. It is a very large business, and is present in 47 states. 3.My workplace is located in Oakland, CA and looks like an office building, but my office is in the back building next to a parking lot for garbage trucks. 4.Many people work at this location, probably well over 90 5. My workplace employs many types of people, all people are professional and very friendly, mosthave smiles, or positive attitudes. 6. To my understanding, most people have gone to college, but not all employees have a degree. 7. My workplace serves all people that have a residence, they collect all the garbage and turn it into energy or land of some sort. 8. A big strength of my workplace is my mentor has set up a very direct and explicit syllabus making the internship a lot easier yet provides so much to learn. 9. I see no direct weaknesses of my workplace yet.
